1 John 4:19 Text
King James Version (KJV)
We love him, because he first loved us.
World English Bible (WEB)
We love him, because he first loved us.
What 1 John 4:19 Means
This short sentence explains where love comes from. Our love for God, and by extension for other people, is a response, not a starting point. God loved first, and love grows in us as we receive that. John is rejecting the idea that we must work up affection on our own or earn God's attention through devotion. The WEB and KJV read almost identically, though some ancient manuscripts leave out the word him, so many modern translations read simply, we love because he first loved us. That wider wording fits John's context, since the verses around it talk about loving fellow believers. Love of God and love of neighbor are tied together, because John says anyone who claims to love God while hating a brother is lying.
Context of 1 John 4:19
The letter of 1 John is traditionally attributed to the apostle John, probably written near the end of the first century, probably from Ephesus. It was addressed to Christian communities troubled by false teaching that denied Jesus had come in the flesh. John repeatedly returns to love as a test of real faith. This verse closes a passage about perfect love driving out fear and is followed by the command that those who love God must love others also. To read the whole book, see random verse from 1 John.
How to Apply 1 John 4:19
If loving people feels like a duty you cannot keep up, this verse suggests starting by receiving rather than producing. Spend a moment remembering how you have been shown kindness, then pass some along to someone who is struggling. Love that comes from being loved tends to last longer than love driven by guilt.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 1 John 4:19 mean?
It means our love for God and others is a response to the love God showed us first. We do not generate love from nothing. Being loved by God is the source that allows us to love in return.
Why does 1 John link loving God with loving people?
John argues that you cannot truly love the God you cannot see while refusing to love the people you can see. In the following verse he calls that contradiction a lie. Receiving God's love is meant to shape how we treat others.
