Ephesians 2:8-9 Text

King James Version (KJV)

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

World English Bible (WEB)

for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.

What Ephesians 2:8-9 Means

Paul is explaining how a person is brought into right standing with God. Grace means a favor that is undeserved, and the verse says that salvation comes by it, received through faith. Faith here is trust, the empty hand that accepts a gift, rather than a good deed that earns a reward. The phrase and that not of yourselves is debated: some take it to refer to faith itself being a gift, others to the whole package of salvation. Either way, the main idea is that the credit does not belong to us, which is why Paul says no one has grounds to boast. A frequent misreading takes the verse to mean that actions do not matter at all. The very next verse says believers are made for good works, so the order is that works flow out of salvation rather than purchase it.

Context of Ephesians 2:8-9

Ephesians is a letter traditionally attributed to Paul, written while he was imprisoned, probably in Rome around the early 60s AD. Some scholars question his authorship. It was sent to Christians in Asia Minor, many of them Gentiles. Just before this passage Paul describes people as spiritually dead and then made alive in Christ. Right afterward he says believers are God's workmanship, created for good works prepared in advance. To read the whole book, see random verse from Ephesians.

How to Apply Ephesians 2:8-9

Many people quietly believe they are accepted only when they are productive. This verse gives permission to rest from that. You can serve, give, and work hard, but out of thanks rather than fear of falling short. If you notice yourself comparing your efforts with someone else's, remember there is nothing here to compete over. Let the gift be received first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Ephesians 2:8-9 mean?

It teaches that people are saved by God's undeserved favor, received through trusting him, and not by earning it through good deeds. Because it is a gift, nobody can take credit. Good works are meant to follow as a response, which the next verse explains.

Do good works matter if we are saved by grace?

Yes, but as a result rather than a payment. Ephesians 2:10 says believers were created to do good works. The works show gratitude and change in a person, while the standing before God comes from grace alone.
