John 15:5 Text
King James Version (KJV)
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
World English Bible (WEB)
I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
What John 15:5 Means
Jesus uses a picture every vineyard worker would know. He is the vine, his followers are branches, and branches stay alive and produce fruit only while attached. 'Abideth' in the KJV, 'remains' in the WEB, means to stay, live, and continue in a close relationship, not just to visit now and then. The fruit is not defined as a single thing; in this chapter it includes love, obedience, joy, and lasting results in the lives of others. The last phrase, 'you can do nothing', is blunt. It does not say believers can do nothing at all, since people clearly act without faith. In context it means nothing that bears lasting fruit in God's sight can happen apart from him. The point is dependence, not discouragement.
Context of John 15:5
John's Gospel, traditionally attributed to the apostle John, records this in the long conversation Jesus has with his disciples on the night before his crucifixion. Jesus has just told them he is leaving, and he uses the vine image to explain how they will stay connected to him afterward. The chapter goes on to speak of his love, his commands, and the world's hatred of them. To read the whole book, see random verse from John.
How to Apply John 15:5
If you are tired of trying to produce results by sheer effort, this verse offers some relief. Staying connected can be as plain as a few minutes of prayer or reading each day, and being with others who follow him. Pay attention to what grows when you do. Fruit takes time, so be patient with yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to abide in Christ?
To abide means to stay in ongoing, close relationship with Jesus, trusting him, remembering his words, and obeying him. In the vine picture, a branch simply stays attached so that his life can flow through it.
Does John 15:5 mean we can do nothing without God?
Not literally. People obviously can act without faith. In context Jesus means we can produce no lasting, spiritual fruit apart from him. The aim is to show our dependence on him, not to say that we are useless.
