Mark 9:23 Text
King James Version (KJV)
Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
World English Bible (WEB)
Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
What Mark 9:23 Means
A father has brought his son, troubled by a spirit, to Jesus after the disciples could not help. He says if you can do anything, have compassion on us. Jesus picks up his words and turns them around: if you can? All things are possible to him who believes. The focus is on the father's tentative request, not on a formula for getting anything. The verse does not say that believing hard enough guarantees any outcome; it says that for the one who trusts, God's power is not ruled out. The father's honest reply in the next verse, I believe; help my unbelief, shows that faith and doubt can exist side by side. Both the KJV and WEB say if you can believe, which can sound as if Jesus is setting a test. Most scholars read it as gentle correction of the father's doubt about Jesus' ability.
Context of Mark 9:23
Mark's Gospel, traditionally linked to John Mark and possibly drawing on Peter's memories, was probably written in the decades after Jesus' ministry. This scene takes place just after the Transfiguration, when Jesus comes down the mountain and finds a crowd arguing with his disciples. After the father's plea, Jesus heals the boy, and later tells the disciples that this kind needs prayer. To read the whole book, see random verse from Mark.
How to Apply Mark 9:23
If you have faith mixed with doubt, you are in good company. Try praying the father's words: I believe, help my unbelief. Do not treat unanswered prayer as proof you failed to believe enough. Faith is a relationship of trust, not a lever to pull.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mark 9:23 mean I can have anything if I believe?
No. In context, Jesus is addressing a father who doubted whether Jesus could help his son. The verse says trust opens the door to God's power, not that belief guarantees any wish. Many other passages remind us that God's will matters.
What does help my unbelief mean in Mark 9?
It is the father's honest reply to Jesus: he trusts, yet still struggles with doubt, and asks for help. It shows that faith does not have to be perfect to be received, and that mixed feelings can be brought to God.
