Matthew 18:20 Text
King James Version (KJV)
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
World English Bible (WEB)
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”
What Matthew 18:20 Means
Jesus says that when even a very small group meets with him as the reason for gathering, he is present among them. The phrase 'in my name' means more than saying a closing formula; it points to gathering under his authority and for his purposes. The numbers matter too: two or three is a very small gathering, so no group is too small to qualify. The WEB renders the last phrase as 'in the middle of them', which is nearly the same idea as the KJV 'in the midst'. People sometimes lift this line out as a promise about answered group prayer or as a comment on attendance. In its setting it is firmer and quieter than that: it is about how Christians settle disputes and stay together, and about Jesus being truly with a few people who are seeking him.
Context of Matthew 18:20
These words come from Matthew's Gospel, traditionally attributed to the apostle Matthew, in a section where Jesus teaches his disciples how the community should live. The verse closes his instructions on confronting a brother or sister who has done wrong, first privately, then with one or two witnesses, then before the church. Just after it, Peter asks how many times he must forgive, and Jesus answers with a parable about a servant who refused mercy. To read the whole book, see random verse from Matthew.
How to Apply Matthew 18:20
If your church is small, or your regular group is only a couple of friends, you can stop measuring it against larger gatherings. A short conversation, a shared meal, or a brief prayer together can be the real thing. Consider who you could invite, and let reconciliation, not performance, set the tone when you meet.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 'where two or three are gathered' mean?
It means that Jesus is present with even the smallest group meeting in his name. The context is community life and resolving conflict, so the promise is mainly about his guidance and presence among believers, not a rule about group size.
Is Matthew 18:20 about prayer meetings?
Partly. The verse before it speaks of agreement in prayer, so prayer fits. But the surrounding chapter deals with correcting wrongs and forgiving, so the verse is best read as Jesus being present whenever believers gather to seek him and sort out their relationships.
