Proverbs 4:23 Text
King James Version (KJV)
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
World English Bible (WEB)
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.
What Proverbs 4:23 Means
A father is advising his son to guard his heart carefully, because the heart is the source from which life flows. In Hebrew thought the heart is the center of thoughts, desires, and decisions, not just emotions. The word diligence suggests posting a watch, as a guard would at a gate, so the picture is active vigilance over what is allowed in. The second half uses the image of a spring or fountain, which means that what comes out of a person's life, including words and actions, reflects what is in the heart. The KJV phrase issues of life is a bit old-fashioned, and the WEB says wellspring of life, which is clearer. The verse is sometimes used to justify guardedness against all people, but its context is about moral and spiritual attentiveness, particularly what a person lets shape his attitudes.
Context of Proverbs 4:23
Proverbs is traditionally connected to Solomon, and the first nine chapters read as a father's speeches to a young son, urging him to seek wisdom. Chapter 4 recalls the instruction the father himself received. Just before this verse, he tells the son to hold on to his words, and right after it he turns to speech and the eyes, advising him to keep his mouth honest and his gaze straight ahead. How to Apply Proverbs 4:23
Consider what you are feeding your mind and heart, whether news, media, conversations, or private thoughts. You do not need to cut off everything, but you can choose a few things to reduce and a few to add. Guarding your heart is more like tending a garden than building a wall.

It means paying careful attention to your inner life, including your thoughts, desires, and values, because they shape how you live. It calls for watchfulness over what influences you, not for shutting others out.

Not in its original setting. The proverb is about moral and spiritual alertness, not emotional isolation. People often apply it to dating, but the verse itself speaks more broadly about the source of a person's choices and character.
