And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

What Romans 12:2 Means

Paul gives two contrasting commands in one breath: do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. "Conformed" means being pressed into a mold, so the warning is against quietly taking on the shape of the surrounding culture's values. "Transformed" is the word from which we get metamorphosis, a deep change from the inside out. Notice that the change happens through the mind, not through stronger willpower alone: thinking is retrained over time. The purpose clause says the result is being able to discern, or "prove," what God's will is, described as good, pleasing, and perfect. "This world" here refers to the present age with its priorities, not to the physical earth or to people in general. It is not a call to withdraw from society.

Context of Romans 12:2

Paul wrote Romans to the Christians in Rome, probably around AD 56 to 57. The first eleven chapters explain what God has done in Christ; chapter 12 turns to how believers should live in response. Just before, verse 1 urges them to offer their bodies as a living sacrifice, in view of God's mercies. Just after, Paul warns against thinking too highly of oneself and begins to describe how different gifts work together in one body. To read the whole book, see random verse from Romans.

How to Apply Romans 12:2

Pay attention to what you let shape your thinking: the feeds you scroll, the voices you listen to, the assumptions you carry. Renewal is slow and happens through steady habits, such as reading Scripture, praying, and spending time with people who tell you the truth. Pick one small habit this week and keep it up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to be transformed by the renewing of your mind?

It means your thinking is gradually reshaped by God, through Scripture, prayer, and community, so your values and choices change from the inside. It is a lifelong process, not a single moment.

What does conformed to this world mean in Romans 12:2?

It means letting the dominant values and habits of the surrounding culture mold you without question. Paul is not telling believers to leave society but to examine what shapes their minds and choose differently.
