Galatians 2:20 Text

King James Version (KJV)

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

World English Bible (WEB)

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.

What Galatians 2:20 Means

Here Paul uses vivid, personal language to describe what faith means. Being crucified with Christ is not literal; it pictures the old self-driven life as having been put to death together with Jesus, so that Christ now lives through him. The WEB says it is no longer I who live, which makes the shift of control easier to hear. Yet Paul does not say he disappears. He still lives in the flesh, in a real body with real days, and he lives that life by faith in the Son of God. The reason given is love: the Son loved me and gave himself up for me. The verse is sometimes read as a call to erase personality or to try harder, but Paul's emphasis is on trust in what Christ has done. The word me is important too; he treats the cross as personally directed, not just a general event.

Context of Galatians 2:20

Paul wrote Galatians to churches in the region of Galatia, in what is now Turkey, probably in the late 40s or 50s AD. He was upset that some were adding requirements from the Jewish law to faith in Christ. This verse comes at the end of chapter 2, where he argues that being right with God comes through faith, not through law-keeping. To read the whole book, see random verse from Galatians.

How to Apply Galatians 2:20

When you are tired of trying to prove yourself, this verse offers another way to live: rely on being loved first. Try beginning a task by asking for help instead of strength, and see what changes. Faith here is not self-improvement but trust in someone who has already acted.
