John 10:10 Text
King James Version (KJV)
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
World English Bible (WEB)
The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.
What John 10:10 Means
Jesus contrasts two kinds of people who come to the sheep. The thief arrives only to take, to kill, and to ruin, while Jesus comes so that the sheep can have life, and have it in overflow. The 'abundant' life is not defined as wealth, comfort, or a problem-free path; in John, life usually means a real, lasting relationship with God that begins now and continues beyond death. The KJV 'more abundantly' and the WEB 'abundantly' say the same thing: life beyond the bare minimum. People sometimes read the thief as the devil, which fits the language, but the immediate target in the chapter is false religious leaders who exploit the people they should protect. Jesus presents himself as the good shepherd who even gives up his life for the sheep.
Context of John 10:10
John records this in Jesus' teaching after he healed a man born blind and the religious leaders drove that man out. Jesus then describes himself with images from sheep farming, as the gate for the sheep and as the good shepherd. Traditionally the Gospel is attributed to John the apostle. The talk continues with Jesus saying he knows his sheep and lays down his life for them. To read the whole book, see random verse from John.
How to Apply John 10:10
Abundant life in this passage is a gift from a caring shepherd, not a result you earn by working harder. You may find it helpful to ask where you have been chasing fullness in other places, and to spend a few quiet minutes simply listening for his voice. Ordinary days can be full when they are lived with him.
