John 8:32 Text
King James Version (KJV)
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
World English Bible (WEB)
You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
What John 8:32 Means
Jesus links knowing the truth with freedom, but the verse is a conclusion to a condition. Verse 31 says it applies to those who continue in his word, so 'the truth' here is not general information or any accurate fact. It is what Jesus teaches and who he is, as he says in John 14:6. The freedom he has in mind is explained a few verses later as freedom from the slavery of sin. Both KJV and WEB use 'know', which in Greek suggests learning through experience, not just agreeing with a statement. The verse is often quoted on school buildings and in debates about facts and honesty, and a love of truth is good, but that is a secondary use. The primary meaning is that following Jesus' teaching sets a person free from what binds them.
Context of John 8:32
John's Gospel records this during Jesus' teaching in the temple area in Jerusalem, during or soon after the Feast of Tabernacles. Some of his listeners had begun to believe in him, and he challenges them to keep following his teaching. They respond that they are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves, which leads Jesus to explain that everyone who sins is a slave to sin. How to Apply John 8:32
Freedom here starts with staying close to what Jesus said, not with having every answer. You might choose one habit or fear that keeps a grip on you and bring it openly to his teaching and to a trusted friend. Growth usually comes slowly, by continuing, not by one burst.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 'the truth shall make you free' mean?
In context, Jesus says that knowing his teaching, and him, frees a person from the power of sin. It is a spiritual freedom that comes from continuing in his word, not a promise that any fact learned will solve every problem.
Is John 8:32 about knowing facts?
Not mainly. The truth in John's Gospel centers on Jesus himself and his word. Honesty and facts matter in the Bible, but this verse promises freedom for those who stay with Jesus' teaching, as the line before it makes clear.
