Romans 8:1 Text
King James Version (KJV)
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
World English Bible (WEB)
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
What Romans 8:1 Means
Paul opens this chapter with a conclusion drawn from the argument of chapters 1 through 7: those who are 'in Christ Jesus' face no condemnation. The word means a guilty verdict, along with its penalty, so the statement is about legal standing before God. The second half of the KJV, 'who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit', is missing in some early manuscripts, and many modern translations leave it out or footnote it; the WEB keeps it. Either way, the 'flesh' here means human nature operating on its own, and the 'Spirit' is God's Spirit at work in believers. A common misreading takes the verse to mean a Christian should never feel guilt or conviction. Paul is describing the verdict, not banning conscience. The verse is about how God sees those who belong to Christ, not about how we feel on any given day.
Context of Romans 8:1
Paul wrote Romans to the Christians in Rome, probably from Corinth around 57 AD, before he had visited the city. Chapters 1 to 7 explain that everyone has sinned and that God offers righteousness through faith in Christ. Chapter 7 ends with Paul describing his own inner struggle with sin. Chapter 8 opens with this verse as the answer, and goes on to describe life in the Spirit and God's unbreakable love. To read the whole book, see random verse from Romans.
How to Apply Romans 8:1
If you replay your failures and expect God to be disappointed, read this verse slowly. It speaks of a verdict already settled for those in Christ. You can still own your mistakes and make amends, but you can do so without dread. Rest in that standing, and let it free you to try again.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Romans 8:1 mean?
It means that people who belong to Christ are no longer under God's guilty verdict. Paul presents it as the result of what Christ has done, so believers can live with security rather than fear of punishment.
Does Romans 8:1 mean Christians will never feel guilty?
No. The verse is about legal standing before God, not emotions. A Christian may still feel remorse or conviction, which can be healthy, but the verse says that guilt does not decide how God sees them if they are in Christ.
