Draw a random Bible verse about forgiveness, with a short note on where it comes from and what it means.
Forgiveness in both Testaments
The Bible treats forgiveness as something God offers and something he asks people to extend. The Old Testament shows it in stories like Joseph and his brothers, in the temple prayers of Solomon, and in psalms of confession. The prophets add promises that God will cleanse and restore a people who had broken faith with him.
What Jesus and the apostles add
Jesus links receiving forgiveness with giving it, most clearly in the Lord's Prayer and the parable of the unforgiving servant. He also forgives from the cross. The apostles ground forgiveness in his death and urge believers to put away bitterness and treat each other as God has treated them. Forgiving someone does not always mean pretending nothing happened, and many passages pair it with honest confrontation or repentance.
