Draw a random Bible verse about marriage, love, and family, with a short note on its context and meaning.
Marriage and family in Scripture
The Bible opens and closes with weddings: the first couple in Genesis and the marriage feast in Revelation. In between, it shows real households with laughter and strain, including loyalty like Ruth's, tenderness in the Song of Solomon, and sober warnings in Proverbs about quarreling and unfaithfulness. This page gathers verses on marriage, love, commitment, and the wider circle of parents and children.
Reading the passages with care
Many verses on marriage were written to ancient households, so it helps to read the surrounding chapter and notice who is being addressed. Paul's picture in Ephesians 5 begins with mutual submission and compares a husband's love to Christ's self-giving. Even a line such as 1 Corinthians 13, often read at weddings, was first written to a quarrelsome church about everyday love. Where a verse touches painful experiences, such as divorce or a difficult household, bring it to a trusted pastor or counselor rather than reading it alone.
Ways to use a random verse
- Read it aloud with your spouse or a close friend, and talk about one point.
- Use it as a prayer for a wedding, an anniversary, or a family milestone.
- Write it in a card for a couple you know.
Scripture also treats marriage as a picture of deeper loyalty: the prophets describe God's covenant love with his people in wedding language, and Paul uses marriage to speak of Christ and the church. Whatever your own situation, these verses give a vocabulary for faithfulness, forgiveness, and patience. Families in the Bible are never idealized. Jacob's household is full of favoritism, David's is torn by conflict, and yet God works in and through them. These stories can be a comfort to anyone whose home is imperfect.
