For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

What 2 Timothy 1:7 Means

Paul reminds a younger coworker that fear is not what God put inside him. The verse lists three things God did give: power, love, and a sound mind. The KJV says sound mind, while the WEB says self-control. The Greek word is sophronismos, which carries the idea of a disciplined, well-balanced mind, a person who stays steady instead of being driven by panic. It does not mean that anxiety is a sin or that people with anxiety disorders lack faith. Reading it that way hurts people unfairly. The word fear here is closer to timidity or cowardice, the kind of shrinking back that keeps someone from speaking and serving. Paul is encouraging Timothy to keep using the gift he was given, not to feel ashamed of the gospel, and not to be paralyzed by the opposition around him.

Context of 2 Timothy 1:7

This is from Paul's second letter to Timothy, probably written near the end of his life, while he was imprisoned in Rome around the mid-60s AD. Timothy was a young leader in Ephesus, apparently facing pressure and perhaps hesitancy. Before this verse Paul recalls Timothy's sincere faith and tells him to fan into flame the gift of God. Afterward he urges him not to be ashamed of the testimony. To read the whole book, see random verse from 2 Timothy.

How to Apply 2 Timothy 1:7

If you feel timid about something you know is right, such as speaking up, forgiving, or beginning something hard, this verse suggests asking for power, love, and steadiness rather than waiting to feel unafraid. Courage usually shows up alongside fear. And if your anxiety is chronic, reaching out to a doctor or counselor is a wise step, not a failure of faith.
