Isaiah 41:10 Text

King James Version (KJV)

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

World English Bible (WEB)

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

What Isaiah 41:10 Means

God speaks directly to his people with a short command and a string of reasons. Do not fear, because I am with you; do not be dismayed, because I am your God. Then come three promises: I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you. The grounds for courage are God's presence and character, not the absence of danger. "Dismayed" is the idea of looking around anxiously, scanning for threats. The "right hand of my righteousness" is a picture of God's strong, faithful arm holding someone up, since the right hand was the hand of strength. The WEB and KJV differ mainly in modern phrasing. The verse does not say trouble will not come; it says God will be present in it. The repeated "I will" rests the promise on God's commitment, not the listener's grip.

Context of Isaiah 41:10

This is part of the book of Isaiah, traditionally attributed to the prophet Isaiah in the eighth century BC, though many scholars see chapters 40 onward as addressed to Israel during the Babylonian exile, in the sixth century BC. God is speaking to Israel, whom he calls his servant, chosen and not rejected. Just before, he reminds them he took them from the ends of the earth. Just after, he promises that those who rage against them will be put to shame. To read the whole book, see random verse from Isaiah.

How to Apply Isaiah 41:10

When fear shows up, try saying the verse as a conversation: "You are with me." Fear usually asks what might go wrong, and this verse shifts the question to who is with you. It will not remove a hard diagnosis or a hard conversation, but you can take one next step while holding onto the promise of help.
